The emotions of German businesses in the US have taken a significant nosedive in response to Donald Trump's trade policy. Digging the dirt on this matter, the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) unveiled that a mere 14% of the surveyed firms now anticipate a brighter economic future in the next year, dropping from a hopeful 38% in autumn. As Volker Treier, DIHK's head of foreign trade, put it, "What was once hope is now disenchantment." 😞
A whopping 44% of German companies lodged in the US now envision a financial slump, marking a staggering sixfold jump from the autumn numbers when merely 7% harbored such fears. Treier surmised, "We're currently witnessing a sort of lurching policy from the US government. This leaves companies in the lurch, deters investment, and even disturbs long-established ventures."
Around a third of the companies expect a positive business trajectory, while a quarter predict a downfall. The survey, conducted between March and mid-April, covered approximately 100 German companies in the US.
"What's driving companies up the wall today is a lack of dependability," explained Treier. Tariff shifts and the yo-yoing of tariffs are gumming up investment decisions and elevating "fundamental doubts" about the US as a base for business. As for investment plans, while 37% aimed to expand their local investments in autumn 2024, now only 24% do so. Conversely, 29% want to downsize their investments, that's a 11-point increase.

Note: Here's a sneak peek at the global impact. Currently, a whopping 85% of German companies operating in the US expect some type of negative impact due to US trade policies, which dwarfs the negative impact in any other region worldwide. This reflects a sharp decline in optimism, particularly in North America, and increased worries amongst German companies. Additionally, the broader German economy is also affected by the ongoing trade tensions, with exporters experiencing challenges due to tariffs and a predicted 2.5% decline in exports for 2025. The German Chamber of Commerce highlights labor costs and trade barriers as key hurdles for businesses. All told, the sentiment amongst German companies in the US and abroad has grown increasingly pessimistic due to the ongoing trade spats and policy conundrums. 🤔💡💔
