Vonovia Expands Recruitment Efforts Amidst Growth and Challenges

Vonovia, Europe's largest private residential real estate company, is on an expansion spree, aiming to hire around 2,800 employees by the end of the year. The company, which owns approximately 533,000 apartments in Germany, Sweden, and Austria, is not only looking within Germany for talent but is also recruiting outside of the country, including in Colombia.

The recruitment drive is a response to a shortage of skilled workers in trades, a challenge that Vonovia is actively addressing. This strategy enables the company to tap into a broader pool of qualified professionals, helping it maintain business expansion.

In the first half of the year, Vonovia generated a profit of around 811 million euros, with Adjusted EBITDA increasing by 12% to 1.4 billion euros. The company's average monthly rent rose by 4.6% to 8.22 euros per square meter, with Germany seeing an average monthly rent per square meter of 8.05 euros, an increase of 4.1% compared to the previous year.

However, Vonovia's growth strategy has drawn criticism from the North Rhine-Westphalia Tenants' Association, which labelled it a "growth strategy with dark sides". The association accused Vonovia of inventing or illegal living value features and demanding unjustified rent increases. The association's chairman, Hans-Jochem Witzke, advised tenants to have every rent increase checked by their local tenants' association.

Despite these challenges, Vonovia's CEO, Rolf Buch, remains optimistic. He stated that the company is in need of skilled workers such as electricians, tilers, painters, roofers, etc. The upward trend in real estate values continues, according to Vonovia, contributing to a stable rental business and increases in the operating result in the business with additional services, project development, and the sale of properties.

As of June 30, Vonovia employed around 12,400 people, an increase of 2.5% from the previous year. The company aims to fill the 2,800 open positions by the end of the year, a goal that its international recruitment drive is expected to support.
