VRR Simplifies Fares: Two-Honeycomb Fare Gone by 2026, Prices Up 4.9% in 2026

The Rhine-Ruhr Transport Association (VRR) has announced plans to simplify its fare system by abolishing the complex two-honeycomb fare in major cities by 2026. This move aims to replace it with a uniform city area fare. Additionally, ticket prices in the VRR area are set to rise by an average of 4.9 percent from January 2026, primarily due to increased costs for personnel, energy, and investments in climate-friendly drives.

The two-honeycomb fare, a colloquial term for the long-standing DB Stammstreckentickets in the Rhine-Ruhr region, is being phased out as part of the nationwide introduction of the 49-Euro Deutschlandticket and the harmonization of tariffs in the public storage network. This change aims to reduce complexity and improve the overall user experience. The state government has been expanding public transport, leading to the introduction of the Land-Ticket, a nationwide, relatively affordable offer that allows passengers to use the entire public transport network in North Rhine-Westphalia for 58 euros per month. Despite these changes, only about one percent of passengers still use the two-honeycomb fare due to the introduction of the Land-Ticket.

The VRR's decision to abolish the two-honeycomb fare and introduce a uniform city area fare, along with the planned price increase, reflects the ongoing evolution of public transport in the region. These changes aim to simplify ticketing, improve affordability, and encourage the use of public transport. As North Rhine-Westphalia continues to renegotiate mobility, passengers are advised to stay informed about the latest developments and official sources for up-to-date information.
