Wandsworth Council's 7% Rent Hike Sparks Controversy Amid Cost-of-Living Crisis

Wandsworth Council has sparked controversy with a 7% increase in council housing rents, a move slammed by the opposition as adding to residents' financial strain during the cost-of-living crisis. The rent hike, effective from April 2023, will see an average weekly increase of £8.03, excluding service charges. This comes despite the current inflation rate standing at 9.2%. The council defends the decision, stating it will help meet costs and fund better services, repairs, and new estate managers. Furthermore, the council aims to tackle homelessness and improve housing standards through this measure. Labour, then led by Simon Hogg, had previously pushed for a reduction in council housing rents to make homes more affordable for residents. However, the current administration has opted for an increase. In a positive development, benefits, including working-age benefits and the State Pension, will rise in line with inflation from April 2023. The rent increase, though below the current inflation rate, has been criticized for putting additional financial pressure on residents. The council, however, maintains that it is necessary to fund better services and tackle homelessness.
