European Industries Call for Action with the Antwerp Declaration

European industries are facing a challenging period, with high energy prices, decreasing demand, and a severe economic downturn – the worst in a decade. In an effort to address these issues, over 1000 industry leaders, including the Secretary General of our website, Benjamin Krieger, have signed the Antwerp Declaration.

The Antwerp Declaration, launched in January 2024, represents companies and organizations across various energy-intensive sectors with a combined value added of €550+ billion and employing 7.8+ million workers. The declaration was signed by leading representatives of large industrial sectors, foremost the chemical industry, and was attended personally by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The Antwerp Declaration stresses the importance of maintaining a strong, competitive industrial base while meeting the objectives of the EU Green Deal. It proposes a European Industrial Deal that aims to enhance the competitiveness of European industries, complement the EU Green Deal, and lower energy prices for European industries.

The European Industrial Deal, as proposed in the Antwerp Declaration, seeks to stabilize investments in European industries and improve their economic situation. It aims to be at the core of the next EU Strategic Agenda 2024 - 2029.

The Antwerp Declaration emphasizes the need for Europe's transition to net zero to be both equitable and economically viable. It presents 10 concrete calls for a European Industrial Deal, based on 10 concrete actions. These actions include measures to improve the business environment, promote innovation, and ensure fair competition.

European industries are calling for clarity, predictability, and increased confidence in Europe's industrial competitiveness. The Antwerp Declaration is a call for decision-makers to prioritize a European Industrial Deal in the upcoming EU Strategic Agenda. It aims to urge decision-makers in the upcoming European legislative cycle to prioritize a European industrial deal that aligns with the objectives of the EU Green Deal.

As investments in European industries shift to other regions, the Antwerp Declaration serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting Europe's industrial base. It is a call for action to ensure the continued success and competitiveness of European industries in the face of challenging economic conditions.
