Hey there, drivers! Buckle up, 'cause this weekend's gonna be a bumpy ride. Several major motorways will experience closures in and around Cologne, the Ruhr area, and Sauerland. Here's a lowdown on what to expect, and, more importantly, how to navigate the mess.

The Cologne motorway ring, specifically the A1, is going to be a total nightmare. Construction work near the new Leverkusen Rhine bridge has forced a complete closure of the A1 between Leverkusen-West and Leverkusen from Friday evening to Monday morning. Bummer, right? But don't throw in the towel just yet.

If you're headed towards Dortmund on the A1, don't panic. You'll be redirected to the A59 to Düsseldorf and the A46. But if you're bound for Koblenz, you've got a bit more work ahead. An extended detour is necessary: take the A59 towards Düsseldorf to the Leverkusen-Rheindorf junction, then hop back on the A59 to the Leverkusen-West interchange, from where you can finally continue on the A1 towards Koblenz. Talk about a rollercoaster, huh?

But fear not, there's a somewhat easier alternative. The Rhineland ferry between Leverkusen-Hitdorf and Cologne-Langel could be your saving grace. It'll be operational on Saturdays and Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Keep this little lifesaver in mind when sketching out your travel plans.

The ADAC Nordrhein is sounding the alarm. They warn of an increased risk of traffic jams due to the construction site, as if the weekend wasn't already packed with chaos. And remember, even though the closures are taking place over the weekend, there are plenty of other construction sites on the so-called Cologne ring motorways, adding to the potential congestion.

Moving north, the A52 between Düsseldorf and Essen is also closed. They're demolishing a pedestrian bridge there, creating yet another headache for road users. As for the A42 at the Herne interchange, it's closing this weekend for changes in the traffic management of the existing major construction site.

Lastly, there's an additional restriction on A45 near Lüdenscheid. The direction towards Dortmund will be closed between Lüdenscheid-Nord and Hagen-Süd due to renovation of the Brunsbecke bridge.

So, keep these closures in mind, from Friday evening to Monday morning, and remember—alternative routes are your best friends this weekend. Follow parallel highways, local roads, and detour signs where necessary. And, most importantly, be patient, expect delays, and buckle up for an epic driving adventure!

In light of the weekend chaos on highways, the community could benefit from shared travel information to navigate the major route closures more effectively. The construction on the A1 near Leverkusen calls for industry to collaborate in finding financing for alternative transportation means, such as ferries, to minimize the impact on road users.
