Weekly Sustainability Roundup (July 15-20, 2025)

In the realm of corporate clean energy leadership, Google is making significant strides. On July 15, 2025, the tech giant signed a $3 billion deal for hydropower in the United States, marking the largest clean energy agreement of its kind [1]. This deal, with Brookfield Asset Management, will supply 670 megawatts of clean energy from Pennsylvania’s Susquehanna River, aligning with Google’s plan to invest $25 billion in data center infrastructure across the mid-Atlantic U.S. region [2].

Google's strategic shift towards long-duration, firm carbon-free power is evident in its innovative energy storage partnerships. The company has partnered with Energy Dome, a Milan-based company, to deploy Energy Dome’s CO2 Battery technology. This long-duration energy storage solution uses carbon dioxide to store and dispatch energy efficiently for 8–24 hours, enabling Google to firm up intermittent renewable sources like solar and wind, and meet its ambitious goal of running all operations on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030 [3][4].

Meanwhile, in Kenya, engineers have begun using geothermal steam to capture carbon dioxide directly from the air, scaling up direct air capture technology [5]. This project, leveraging Kenya's geothermal resources, could pave the way for wider adoption of direct air capture technology in other regions with similar geothermal resources. The success of this project could be a significant step towards combating climate change [6].

Elsewhere, Nestlé, Barry Callebaut, and re.green have launched a partnership to restore degraded areas in Brazil's cocoa and coffee regions. The partnership aims to enhance biodiversity and carbon sequestration through reforestation and sustainable agricultural practices in Brazil [7].

India is also taking steps towards enhancing financial sector resilience. The country announced it will introduce climate risk disclosure rules for banks within the next few months, aiming to align with global ESG standards [8].

China, too, is prioritizing sustainable urbanization after decades of rapid growth. The CN Sustainability Summit announced progress in reducing the environmental impact of the events industry, offering practical tools for event organizers to implement sustainable practices [9]. The summit wrapped up in London on July 15, 2025.

In line with China's 2060 carbon neutrality goal, the focus is on green infrastructure and emissions reduction in urban planning [10]. These developments underscore the global commitment to combat climate change and transition to a sustainable future.
