West Rail Vehicle of the First Valley Line West arrives in Edmonton
Edmonton's Valley Line West LRT Project Reaches a Milestone with LRV Arrival
Edmonton's much-anticipated Valley Line West Light Rail Transit (LRT) project has taken a significant step forward, as the first of 46 light rail vehicles (LRVs) arrived in the city in August 2025.
The LRV, shipped from Hyundai Rotem Company's facility in Changwon, South Korea, made its journey across the Pacific Ocean before reaching the Port of Tacoma, Wash., on July 20. From there, it was transported by truck to the Gerry Wright Operations and Maintenance Facility in southeast Edmonton.
The arrival of the LRV marks a milestone for the Valley Line West LRT project, which, when completed in 2028, will stretch from Downtown Edmonton to Lewis Farms. Construction on the project is currently ongoing, with significant progress made in 2024 after slower years in 2022 and 2023.
Brian Latte, director of the Valley Line West with the City of Edmonton, expressed pride in the arrival of the LRV. He stated, "This is a significant milestone for our project. Seeing the LRV here in Edmonton is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved."
The LRV underwent user testing in Edmonton in 2023, with locals interacting with a full-scale mock-up of the vehicle. The results of these tests helped shape the final design of the LRV.
Once the remaining LRVs are delivered, they will undergo testing and commissioning on the Valley Line Southeast tracks at a later time. Measures will be taken to ensure existing passenger service is not impacted during this process.
Hyundai Rotem, the company responsible for supplying the city with the LRVs, will deliver a total of 46 vehicles for the line, with 16 currently at various stages of manufacturing in South Korea. Chiseung Kim, project manager of the Valley Line West with Hyundai Rotem Company, expressed pride in the arrival of the LRV, stating, "We are proud to be a part of this project and to deliver these state-of-the-art LRVs to the city of Edmonton."
The two sets of LRVs (Valley Line West and Southeast) are designed to be fully compatible with the 27-kilometre line, ensuring smooth and efficient service once the LRT opens.
The Valley Line West LRT project is being managed by Marigold Infrastructure Partners. The official target for substantial construction completion is the year 2028, though the exact target opening date remains to be confirmed as testing and other final preparations continue.
