Whale With XRP Short Position Forced to Cover Positions
In the world of high-stakes cryptocurrency trading, the account of the whale known as @qwatio on Hyperliquid has been a subject of interest lately. The trader, who initially gained prominence by opening insanely risky 50x BTC and ETH long positions in early March, has faced a series of costly liquidations.
The most recent incident occurred in July, when @qwatio's account went from $16.3 million to just $67,000. This dramatic drop was due to the trader's massive short positions, worth approximately $334 million, not being profitable. The losses amounted to over $25 million, surpassing the initial account balance.
One of the most damaging short positions was in XRP, where the trader had a 40x leverage. When the price of XRP surged significantly above the entry price of $2.894, @qwatio's XRP short position was forced to be liquidated, resulting in losses exceeding $650,000.
This liquidation was part of a broader series of costly leveraged trading misadventures. In June 2025, @qwatio faced liquidations six times within three days, resulting in losses of $10 million. The trader's account also faced substantial losses with the Solana (SOL) token.
Some have speculated that there might have been insider trading involved due to the suspicious timing of the extremely successful trades. However, it's important to note that these claims are unsubstantiated and merely speculation at this point.
The whale's initial deposits into Hyperliquid were in the millions of USDC tokens. Interestingly, the trader started depositing these tokens right before the list of tokens that would allegedly be included in the U.S. strategic crypto reserve was revealed.
The repeated liquidations show how volatile the cryptocurrency market can be, especially when trading with high leverage. It's a stark reminder of the risks involved in such activities, where the potential for unrealized profits can quickly turn into substantial losses.
