Widening project of the Chisholm Trail Parkway progresses following NTTA's approval of contracts
Beginning this coming summer, the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) will embark on a $250 million project to expand the 13-mile Chisholm Trail Parkway by four lanes. The expansion, approved unanimously by the NTTA's board of directors, will widen the parkway from two lanes, stretching from Crowley Plover Road/FM 1187 in Tarrant County to U.S. Highway 67 in Johnson County.
The contracts for construction, project management, and materials testing—total $188.9 million—were given the green light by the NTTA's board in May. According to NTTA spokesperson Michael Rey, construction is expected to commence approximately two months later, although a specific start date has not been announced.
The NTTA's capital improvement fund, which derives revenue from tolls on its tollways, will finance the project. Tolls along the entire Chisholm Trail Parkway route fluctuate between about $7 and $13, contingent upon the payment service used.
As for the construction of highway entrance and exit ramps to seamlessly connect Interstate 20 in southwest Fort Worth to Chisholm Trail Parkway, such plans are still being formulated, as revealed by NTTA spokesperson Val Lopez. The Texas Department of Transportation will likely play a role in the coordination of these ramps; however, further details such as timeline and responsible parties have yet to be determined.
Significant developments are on track in cities south of Fort Worth as a result of the tollway's expansion. Among these are Cleburne Station, an ambitious 75-acre mixed-use project featuring retail shops, restaurants, and office space, and Craftmasters, a new trade school in Burleson slated to accommodate up to 5,000 students.
