Will the Denza D9 GT significantly transform the high-end car industry?
### Denza Z9 GT and B5: Chinese Brands Enter the European Premium Market
In a significant move, Chinese automotive brand Denza has entered the European market with its flagship model, the Z9 GT, aiming to challenge established luxury brands such as Porsche. The Z9 GT, measuring 5.18m in length and nearly 2m in width, offers both electric and 'super hybrid' options and bears a resemblance to Porsche's Panamera and Taycan models.
The electric version of the Z9 GT boasts around 952bhp from three electric motors, with a 100kWh battery, promising a 0-62mph time of about 3.4 seconds. This performance closely matches or exceeds Porsche Taycan’s specifications. The plug-in hybrid version combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with electric motors to produce around 858bhp and a 0-62mph time of 3.6 seconds, placing it in direct rivalry with the Porsche Panamera plug-in hybrids.
Positioned as a luxury sports sedan for the European market, the Z9 GT aims to offer luxury, design, and performance at a price potentially below Porsche’s offerings, making it appealing to premium European customers seeking alternatives to the Taycan and Panamera. It is also suggested as a possible competitor to the Mercedes AMG GT 4-door coupe.
Meanwhile, Denza's B5 SUV is designed to rival Toyota’s Land Cruiser, particularly the Prado, and similar vehicles like the Lexus GX and Nissan Patrol. The B5 features a ladder frame chassis and shares underpinnings with the Shark 6 ute, emphasizing off-road capability essential for Land Cruiser buyers. Powertrain-wise, the B5 uses a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine combined with dual electric motors, delivering around 505kW (approx. 677hp) and 760Nm of torque. Its 31.8kWh battery allows for over 100 km of electric-only range.
The B5 has been spotted testing in left-hand-drive markets and the name "DENZA B5" is trademarked for these markets, indicating intent for serious commercial entry to compete with Toyota’s established off-road/luxury SUVs.
Denza, a sub-brand of the BYD Group, is the first to enter the European market from BYD's automotive ventures, which began with a joint partnership with Mercedes-Benz. The Z9 GT, built on Denza's unique e3 platform, features screens everywhere, and the D9 MPV has clear antecedents in the shape of the Lexus LM. After the Z9 GT, the rugged B5 SUV and D9 MPV will be released.
The quality of Chinese manufacturing in the automotive industry is now on par with established standards, and Denza models are reported to offer high-quality design, advanced battery tech (BYD Blade Battery), and feature-rich technology, positioning them as credible European market alternatives.
