Work Expectations Beyond Salary for the Youth Generation

The "Youth and Work" survey, a collaborative effort by Confartigianato Imprese Piemonte Orientale, Università del Piemonte Orientale (UPO), and the Monte Rosa, Laghi, Alto Piemonte Chamber of Commerce, has shed light on the factors young people consider when choosing a job in Italy.

According to the survey, conducted in Piemonte Orientale, 81.2% of respondents ranked adequate pay as the most important factor in choosing a job, while 66.2% preferred stable contracts (permanent employment). However, the survey findings indicate that salary is not the only significant factor for young people.

65.4% of respondents considered adequate free time important, and 74.4% prioritized safe working conditions. The logistics and transport sector, associated with negative aspects such as loneliness and hard work by young people, was criticized for these reasons.

The survey also highlighted the importance of opportunities for skills development and upskilling. Particularly in areas like digitalization, artificial intelligence, ecological transition, and the green economy, young people are seeking jobs that offer growth and innovation. This is supported by initiatives such as the 'New Skills Fund' to boost continuing vocational training and employability among young workers.

Other factors, though not explicitly detailed in the survey results, can include salary, work-life balance, and alignment with personal values or social impact. These are common factors generally identified in youth employment studies.

The "Youth and Work" survey is a significant conclusion about the job-choosing factors of young people in Italy. It underscores the need for employers to consider a broader range of factors when attracting young talent.
