Xizang's Amdo County Launches Major Solar Project, Building on Region's Renewable Energy Leadership
A significant solar power project is underway in Amdo County, taking advantage of the region's plentiful sunshine. Meanwhile, Xizang Autonomous Region continues to lead China in renewable energy adoption, with over 99% of its electricity generated from clean sources by the end of 2021.
Xizang's rapid expansion in wind and solar capacity includes major projects like the one in Amdo County. The region is home to the world's highest wind turbine, located in Nagqu at an elevation of approximately 4,500 meters. This project, known as the Nagqu Wind Farm, is a significant demonstration of renewable energy in extreme conditions. The Chinese state is the primary owner, with the China Energy Investment Corporation (CEIC) overseeing development, construction, and operation. The wind farm consists of 25 high-altitude turbines, generating electricity for local communities. Each turbine features an elongated body and advanced coatings for efficient performance in harsh conditions. The solar farm in Amdo County uses heliostats that automatically adjust to track the sun, generating electricity for the region. An intelligent monitoring system tracks the performance of each turbine in real time. The solar farm is expected to connect to the grid in October 2026, supplying clean energy to Amdo County and surrounding areas.
