IAEA sees 'no immediate danger' at Ukrainian nuclear power plant Saporischschja disconnected from the grid - Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Faces Crisis After Tenth Power Disconnection

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, Europe's largest, faces a critical situation. It has been disconnected from external power for the tenth time since the Russia-Ukraine war began, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky describing the state as 'critical'. The plant's operator and Ukrainian officials blame each other for the disconnection.

The plant, which previously generated about one-fifth of Ukraine's electricity, has been repeatedly shelled during the war. Russia and Ukraine each blame the other for the attacks. Despite the disconnection, the plant's operators assure that current diesel supplies will last for another ten days, with regular fuel deliveries maintaining this level. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, with inspectors stationed on-site, reports 'no immediate danger' as long as the generators are running.

The plant's operator, under Rosatom, claims the situation is 'under control'. However, Grossi warns that the current state is 'untenable' regarding nuclear safety. The Russian side is responsible for reconnecting the power supply, planning to connect the plant to Russia-controlled grids and potentially restart one reactor block. Zelensky highlights a 'malfunction' of one of the backup generators, adding to the urgency of the situation.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant's crisis deepens with the tenth disconnection from external power. While operators assure sufficient fuel for the next ten days, the situation is deemed 'critical' and 'untenable' by Ukrainian officials and the IAEA. The Russian side is tasked with reconnecting the power supply, with plans to integrate the plant into Russia-controlled grids. Grossi is in constant contact with both parties to facilitate a 'rapid reconnection'.
